Everyone talks about the mirror. Almost no one talks about the light.
When designing an elevator cabin, the request is often the same:
“I need a mirror.”
Large. Small. Full-height. Half-height. On one wall or even two.
But there’s one question that almost nobody asks:
what’s the point of a mirror if the lighting is wrong?
The real star isn’t the glass
Think about it for a moment.
How many people take photos in front of a mirror today?
A lot of them. And there’s something interesting about that.
They often choose places that have nothing special about them.
Why?
Because that’s where they find lighting that makes them look their best.
The mirror doesn’t make the photo
A mirror reflects. Nothing more.
What really makes the difference is the light illuminating the face.
When the lighting is right:
- the face looks more even
- features are enhanced
- the overall image is more flattering
When the lighting is wrong, no mirror can save the result.
An elevator cabin has a huge advantage
Something interesting happens inside an elevator cabin.
The light usually comes from above.
The mirror reflects it.
The result is a light distribution that can greatly enhance the person standing in front of it.
But there is one condition:
the lighting must be designed correctly.
The most common mistake
Assuming that any lighting will do.
That’s simply not true.
The wrong color temperature, insufficient light, or poor light distribution can completely compromise the perception of the space.
And the perception of the people looking into the mirror as well.
Today, experience matters more than ever.
For the end customer, the elevator is not the motor. It’s not the ropes. It’s not the guide rails.
The elevator is what they actually see.
And among the things they notice most are:
- the cabin
- the mirror
- the lighting
