But there is another widely used technology: the Microwave sensor.
And in certain applications, it can be the better choice.
How does a Microwave sensor work?
Unlike a PIR sensor, a Microwave sensor does not "see" heat.
It operates by emitting microwaves and analyzing the signal that returns.
When a person or object enters the monitored area, the returning signal changes.
It is precisely this variation that allows the sensor to detect presence.
The advantage that changes everything
The most interesting feature of Microwave sensors is one thing:
they can be hidden.
Microwaves can pass through certain non-metallic materials such as glass, plastic, and wood.
This means the sensor does not necessarily have to be visible.
It can be integrated inside a structure while maintaining a clean and elegant design.
Small on the outside, powerful on the inside
Another advantage is their size.
The required electronics are extremely compact.
In many cases, the sensor occupies very little space and can be installed where a PIR sensor would be too bulky or difficult to integrate.
When should you choose PIR and when should you choose Microwave?
This is the question we hear most often.
The answer is simple: it depends on the application.
If the goal is a reliable, cost-effective, and easy-to-install solution, a PIR sensor often remains the most practical choice.
If, on the other hand, the project requires special attention to aesthetics, the Microwave sensor offers a significant advantage.
Because it can do its job without being seen.
The elevator application
Inside an elevator cabin, every detail contributes to the final perception of the product.
Materials, finishes, mirrors, and lighting.
Even a small visible sensor can affect the appearance of the environment.
That is why, in higher-end installations, the Microwave sensor often becomes an attractive solution:
