The truth is, it’s not enough to simply “create light.” You need to know what light you are choosing.
In the elevator industry, the same mistake has been made for years.
People have always thought that simply lighting the space was enough.
Any bulb. Any spotlight. Any ceiling fixture.
Maybe taken from a corridor, a garage, a basement… and adapted to an elevator cabin.
Does it work? Yes.
Is it the right choice? No.
Because that’s not the point.
The problem is not the light. It’s how you choose it
When it comes to technical lighting, the problem is not turning something on.
The problem is what you are installing and why you are choosing it.
Because every light source has specific characteristics. Ignoring them means working without control over the final result.
In elevators, this becomes even more critical.
Because it’s a confined space, used continuously, where:
- perception matters
- quality matters
- reliability matters
And you cannot afford to improvise.
The difference between a product that “works” and one that is “designed”
A garage ceiling light illuminates. A generic spotlight illuminates.
But they are not designed for what you need. Not for lifespan in a specific environment. Not for visual performance in a confined space. Not for lighting consistency.
And above all: not to deliver a professional result.
That’s where the difference shows.
The parameters that really make the difference
When you choose a light source, you are not choosing “a light.”
You are choosing a set of parameters that work together.
The first is color temperature.
It’s not just an aesthetic preference. It determines how the space is perceived.
A warm light (2700–3000K) creates a more welcoming atmosphere.
A neutral light (4000K) is more balanced, more technical.
A cool light (5000–6000K) is more intense, more “clinical.”
You already make a decision here. But it’s not enough.
The amount of light is not an opinion
The second parameter is the amount of light, measured in lumens.
It’s not enough to say “it lights enough.”
You need to understand how much it really illuminates in relation to the space.
If you use a spotlight in the wrong context, it won’t be sufficient.
And the result is a dark or poorly distributed environment.
The detail that changes perception: CRI
Then there is CRI. And it’s one of those values many people ignore.
That’s a mistake.
Because CRI defines how naturally colors are rendered.
A low CRI distorts perception.
A high CRI (above 90) delivers more accurate colors.
In a confined space like an elevator, this is immediately noticeable. And it directly affects how the environment is perceived.
The invisible mistake: SDCM
Then there is an even less considered parameter: SDCM.
It tells you how uniform the light is.
You can have the right color temperature, but if the LEDs are not consistent internally, the result is uneven light. Different areas. Variations in tone.
A result that, even if you don’t know why, feels wrong.
To work correctly, the value must be below 3.
Above that threshold, the human eye starts to notice the differences.
Power supply: where most mistakes happen
Then there’s the part that is often completely underestimated: power supply.
This is where serious errors happen.
Using a generic power supply for an LED source is the wrong choice.
Because a traditional power supply is not designed for this.
It doesn’t guarantee:
- short circuit protection
- overload management
- temperature control
An LED driver, on the other hand, is designed exactly for this.
And it makes the difference between a stable system and one that creates problems over time.
Not all power supplies are the same
And it’s not enough to say “there is a power supply.”
You need to understand what type of power is required:
- constant voltage
- constant current
There is no improvisation here. Because getting this wrong means compromising the entire system.
Professionalism starts here
It’s not about choosing “a product.”
It’s about building a consistent solution. Where:
- the light is correct
- the quantity is right
- the quality is controlled
- the power supply is stable
The moment you stop saying “any light will do”
and start asking “is this the right light for this context?”
that’s when the level changes.
Because you’re no longer installing. You’re designing.
