Has this ever happened to you?
You built an LED light bar. You installed the profile. You added the diffuser cover.
You switch it on.
And instead of seeing a smooth, uniform line of light, you see a row of bright dots.
What you're looking at has a specific name:
the spotting effect.
The problem is not the LED strip
When this happens, the first instinct is to assume the strip is wrong.
In most cases, that's not true.
The issue comes from the relationship between:
- LED spacing
- profile height
- light diffusion
In other words:
choosing a strip is not enough. You need to understand how it works together with the profile.
The rule that almost nobody considers
Every LED emits light with a specific beam angle.
When the light beams from adjacent LEDs overlap, the eye stops perceiving individual points and instead sees a uniform surface.
This is where the so-called LED pitch comes into play, meaning the distance between one LED and the next.
The closer the LEDs are to each other, the faster the light becomes homogeneous.
New technologies have dramatically improved this aspect.
Today, it is easy to find strips with 240 LEDs per meter, and in some cases even more.
This means LEDs are positioned much closer together, resulting in a more uniform light distribution.
The result?
Less spotting effect and significantly better visual quality.
The profile is just as important as the strip
This is where one of the most common mistakes is made.
A high-density LED strip is selected and then installed inside a profile that is too shallow.
If the distance between the strip and the diffuser cover is not sufficient, the light points will remain visible.
For this reason, before choosing a profile, it is essential to verify both the available height and the LED pitch.
When it comes to backlighting, the issue becomes even more critical.
Think about:
- illuminated panels
- backlit signs
- decorative surfaces
- illuminated walls
The larger the surface, the more difficult it becomes to achieve perfect uniformity.
There is no single solution
Depending on the application, different approaches can be used.
These include:
- high-density LED strips
- LED Tile modules
- ultra-thin LED panels
The choice always depends on the available thickness, the size of the illuminated surface, and the desired final result.
The goal is not to add more light
The goal is to make the light uniform.
A backlit surface should not reveal the technology behind it.
It should showcase the result.
And that result is continuous, clean, and homogeneous light.
